Pool filters play a crucial role in a pools circulatory system. Pool filters act as a screen between the water and pumping station filtering out debris and dirt. As water gushes through the pool filter it leaves behind debris, leaves, garbage and dirt making sure that the pool water is safe from getting contaminated. Debris comes in different sizes some which is visible to the eye and other that is very small ranging from 20 to 25 microns to 5 microns and less in terms of size. There are three kinds of pool filters each one designed to filter miniature debris that may get in your pool with water.

Water is pushed by the pump from the pool into the filter which cleans the water from dirt, algae and other minute debris. The pump than circulates the water back into the pool.

There are three different types of pool filters with different specifications and filtration capacities. While installing any type of pool filter you should take professional help so that the job is done properly.

The three types of pool supplies filters are listed below:

(1) Sand filters – The waters goes through a series of sand layers where it gets filtered as the tiny particles get trapped into the sand beds. With excessive usage the sand beds become clogged with debris and this causes the water to flow at a much slower pace. When this happens it means that it’s finally time to clean your sand filter. Sand filters can conveniently be cleaned by the backwashing method.  Using a water hose you make the water run from the bottom and exit from the top this cleans the sand beds of debris and the filter is ready to be installed again. It’s also better to change the filter once every 6 months or depending on your usage.

(2) Cartridge – Made with same materials that are used to make sink filters and they are meant to last longer than sand filters. Cartridge pool filters do not require rigorous maintenance but they do require occasional cleaning. Cartridge filters are longer in size as compared to the sand filters. Common cartridge filters being at 100 foot size and go up to 300 foot range. As these filters run at a low pressure they are less demanding on the pump. Cartridge filters also require cleaning and they are also cleaned through the back washing process. To clean these filters you need a standard water hose, run the water from the bottom to the top to clean the filter of debris. Cartridge filters can filter out debris as small as 20 to 25 microns in terms of size.

(3)Diatomaceous earth filters – This is a naturally occurring material that renders the pool water sparkling. These filters work much harder though they have sand like quality. These filters have the best micron ratings as they are able to filters debris as miniature as 5 microns and less.
